You know the old adage: The eyes are the window to the soul. I’d like to believe the eyes are also a sign of respect between people.
The very act of looking someone directly in the eyes shows professionalism, trustworthiness, and my personal favourite: respect.
This past week I’ve been struggling with how to handle disrespect, especially when it comes from my own boss. When we have our one-to-ones, her eyes are always darting between mine and her computer screen. It annoys me, but I can live with that. During group meetings with vendors or other partners, somehow my eyes are always the ones that get missed.
The off chance that I do get uninterrupted eye contact from my boss, it’s to do one of four things: print her invoices, grab her receipts from behind her desk, check her teeth for food or lipstick stains, or check to see if a colleague is in the office.
And when I’m in a meeting with my boss with someone new and the person actually looks at me consistently and actually says my name, it’s like a million unicorns were just born.
I’m frustrated that I notice this and let it affect my mental state where I start questioning my own skills and job security.
What do I need to do to receive eye contact?
Or is this a case where I just need to let it go and accept it as is?
Let me know if you experienced a lack of eye contact in the workplace and how did it make you feel?
